UTVS Build Breakdown | 2021 Can-Am Maverick X3 Turbo RR "Mr.B" Build
2021 Can-Am Maverick X3 Turbo RR Build
When “Mr.B” reached out to the UTV Source team to handle the build of a 2021 Can-Am Maverick X3 Turbo RR, we couldn’t wait to get our hands on it. The unique requirements of this build focused on performance & safety, and with a generous budget to work with we were able to spare very little in the way of either. While it is definitely possible to build a car that balances both budget and quality, this certainly wasn’t it. Knowing that Mr.B is a rather “spirited” driver and a trusting UTV Source customer we opted for the best of the best to arrive at a car that is strong, fast, functional and SAFE…check this thing out!
EXTERIOR, CAGE, & SAFETY
When working with a build that has high standards and big budget, there is nothing better to secure your safety than a Fabwerx complete cage & door system. With a variety of options including matching door & window kits, window nets, roof racks, upgraded shock brackets, and even a starry night headliner a Fabwerx build can go as mild or as wild as you want.
This awesome cage ties into a trick Geiser Performance Spare Tire Rack & Bumper Combo that improves both the protection and utility of the rear of the CanAm. This paired up perfectly with the Fabwerx cage we used and will work with the stock cage as well as most other aftermarket offerings. Keep in mind this does not work with billet radius rod plates as it increases the material thickness in those locations.
In bringing protection and safety inside the car UTV Source relied on PRP Seats for both seats and harnesses. A custom-built seat was ordered for Mr.B that features a proven hard shell composite structure, badass diamond stitch & carbon fiber design, and a halo system to prevent helmets from slamming together should this equipment wind up being put to use. A PRP 6.2 harness kit rounds out the safety and brings a sense of confidence to both driver and passenger when pushing this car to the max.
PERFORMANCE
When it came to performance the goal was to make the car exciting and fast, but also reliable and fairly low maintenance. This Maverick X3 Turbo RR is no slouch with stock numbers coming in at 195 horsepower, so making it breathe well and sound good were the major objectives here. Rick’s pick to handle the sounds coming out of the car was an RJWC Powersports Carbon Fiber Exhaust. The RJWC unit sounds great, has excellent build quality, and features a rebuildable/packable muffler. We paired this exhaust with an EVO Powersports BOV and “The Shocker” cutout for on the fly “attitude adjustment”. To take full advantage of the better breathing car, Geiser Performance performed a mild tune and some minor clutch work.
And in addressing the other end of the performance spectrum – brakes. The difference in stopping & not stopping when needed could mean that all the effort going into this build is ruined in moments. In standard Mr.B fashion the only suitable answer we could go with for stopping power was the absolutely epic Doppler Racing Brakes CanAm X3 Pro-Series Brake Kit. This setup is 100% plug & play and features CNC machined 4-piston calipers, larger front & rear rotors, performance brake pads and all necessary hardware. If you’re looking for the end-all brake solution for your CanAm, this is it.
SUSPENSION
Although we could easily dump suspension into the “performance” category, this is a topic that can (literally) make or break a car. There are so many things we addressed in this Mr.B build it was only fitting we deep-dive into this subject specifically. The first order of business when it came to suspension was increasing the strength and durability of the car. Many people feel that the achilles heel of the CanAm out of the box is the quality of materials used, and we addressed that by replacing the weak OE control arms with higher-grade material.
First up was the use of the HCR Racing 72” Dual Sport Suspension Kit. This kit brings significant strength to the build while at the same providing increased ground clearance and optimized approach angles. Factory ball joints can be used with this kit as well as more robust aftermarket units. For this application, we sourced a set of LM UTV upper and lower ball joints which bring bulletproof durability to the front of the X3. These ball joints are not only 350% stronger than the OE units, but their greasable and rebuildable design means they’ll be the last set Mr.B will ever need to put in the car!
The rear suspension of the car has been upgraded with the awesome LM UTV 6061 billet aluminum radius rod kit. These trophy-truck-quality parts are offered in both a straight & high clearance version with both featuring 5/8” O-ring sealed spherical bearings with 17-4 stainless hardware. Further improvements were made to the structural integrity of the car that include an LM UTV Shock Tower Mount, Zollinger Racing Products (ZRP) dogbones, and a ZRP Sway Bar to Trailing Link brace.
With the strength and durability of the car dialed in, Mr.B’s ride was ready for the metaphorical cherry on top. Our good friends at Shock Therapy joined the fun and blessed this build with a full catalog of parts and service including a respring and tune of the stock FOX shocks, their Shock Therapy Limit Strap Kit, Front & Rear Adjustable Sway Bars, Adjustable Sway Bar End Links, and their Toe Link Support System. What good is suspension if you can’t steer, right? Well Shock Therapy also dialed in the steering of the CanAm with their Bump Steer Delete Kit and their big badass Billet Race Steering Rack.
